Sample headshots & text for Presenters:
Image resolution is the level of detail in an image, and is determined by the number of pixels in the image. The more pixels an image has, the higher its resolution, and the more detail and definition it will have. Resolution can be measured in different ways, including dots per inch (DPI) and pixels per inch (PPI).
DPI is for images that will be physically printed. If refers to the number of ink droplets a printer will produce per inch, while printing an image. The more dots of ink per inch the picture has, the more detail you will see when printed. The recommended minimum resolution for printing is 300 dpi.
PPI is for digital images and is expressed as the number of horizontal pixels multiplied by the number of vertical pixels. For example, an image that is 200 pixels across and 300 pixels tall would be described as a having a resolution of 200 x 300 PPI (shaped as a rectangle in portrait orientation).
If you want to print a full page 8.5 x 11 inch image, you will need to multiply the inches by 300 dpi:
8.5 inches x 300 dpi = 2550
11 inches x 300 dpi = 3300
For an image to print well on an 8.5x11 inch paper, the image would need to have a resolution of 2550 x 3300 ppi. If the image’s resolution is any less than this, you risk the image looking pixelated when it is printed.

No. Web images are too small to print well. If we print an picture taken from a website, the image will look pixelated. Web images have a resolution equivalent to around 72 DPI. While this resolution works great for the human eye to view the picture on a lighted screen, this resolution is not high enough to meet the minimum print requirement of 300 DPI.
-
No. Screenshots are a lower resolution copy of the original image. They are too small to print well, and will look pixelated.

Most smartphones today have excellent quality cameras with good photo resolution. Here is an excellent article detailing how to take a high quality headshot with a smartphone.
If you take a headshot using a smart phone, ensure that you do not text the picture (to move it from one device to another); texting a photo lowers the resolution of the image. Instead, email the image to transfer it to a computer or other device.
